November Discussion Board

     Education and good citizenship evolved in ancient Athens. It left us with a clear image of what it means to be and educated person and our ultimate goals of education. Until the age of six or seven, most children were raised at home by their mothers or by a trained housekeeper (slaves, or better known as gogos). They would teach them manners (educate), moral beliefs and what to expect when they leave their mothers nest. Greek myths and legends where incorporated into the child’s learning. Girls had a scarce need for education; on the other hand every Athenian father had the right to raise their boy as they pleased. He could either teach his son himself or he could pay slaves to do so.

     When a young Spartan reached the age of seven, they were taken over by the state. The sate rightfully owned him until the day he died. At the age of 16 they were put into a secret police agency. The Spartans where more of a military-based society compared to the Greek way of life.

     Conformity and discipline was strictly enforced in Sparta. In Athens its great philosophers influenced the society: Pericles, Plato etc. Both systems have their pros and cons, given the children of Athens depend on the decision of their parents. The children of Sparta depend on the state, which means they don’t have free will.

     The Colombian education system consists of nursery school, elementary school, high school, technical instruction and a university education. A typical Colombian student studies around 11 years and attempts to go to college.

MY PASSION:

My world revolves around a couple of things: fashion, photography, food and love. Ever since I was little I’ve always had a passion for clothes. There is something about walking out of the house knowing you look good in what you’re wearing. Over the years you start to discover your own style, how you want to present yourself, but also how you want people to see you. I would say my style is different. I like to say I’m “high fashion”.  I try to incorporate unique pieces into my daily wardrobe.

Photography comes naturally to me. I taught myself how to use a camera. I think photography at this moment in time in just a hobby; but when I get older I will appreciate the pictures I took. A picture freezes a moment and it takes you back to that moment. Food is probably my biggest passion. I could eat all day. Tasting new foods is an experience for me; but eating my favorite foods is a like a high. When I’m older I would love to run a restaurant/bar. I would party all night and eat all day. My last passion in: love. Love for you family, friends, partner, life, even the love for yourself. I don’t know how to explain how much I love, love. But to keep it simple, I guess love is the closest thing we have to magic.

 Elective:

My favorite elective has always been art. This year we learned about famous artist. Once we watched a documentary on their life and did more research about them; we had to paint them. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve been fascinated be Fri Decalos work. Living in El Paso Texas, which is in between Texas and New Mexico, you could see her work everywhere. I learned about her love for art, the accident that impacted her life, her struggling relationship with her husband and much more. I believe portrait that I painted in the picture below came out beautifully, but then again, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.

Sociales:

In sociales you touch very important topics. Not only about Colombian history but what is happening to Colombia today. Something that touches my heart very deeply are the soldiers who risk their lives fighting for their country. Now-a-day, Colombia has an ongoing war with the terrorist groups (also known as the FARC). These groups specialize in kidnap, terrorist attacks, drug dealing and much more. The only way we maintain our security is because of these soldiers.  So Mr. Amaya came up with an idea of sending them canned food. I learned the living conditions of the army, what they go through every day, and how to give back.

At the begging of the year we were assigned a project about the book we read over the summer. That’s summer I read three books, but my favorite was Beach Blondes. We were assigned to make a video. I told Ms. Shawn about my passion of photography. So instead of video clips I put pictures I had taken. I got to show, not only my teacher, but also my classmates my love of photography. I learned how to thourally work with iphoto and imovie.
