Universal Themes:
1. Man vs. Self- Twilight. Edward Cullen has to control himself to not drink blood.
2. Man struggles to understand divinity: Mean Girls. Katie enters public school after living her whole life in Africa. She doesn’t understand how to be social or how to really be her self.
3. Man vs Society: Uglies. The Uglies shows us how one society wants something (to be pretty, to be perfect) and how another group of people believe other things are more important.
4. Crime doesn’t pay: Boys N’ the Hood. After all of the illegal activity; Ricky goes to jail and Doughboy ends up dead.
5. Friendship depends on sacrifice: Hunger Games. People are willing to lose their lives to save/ protect, the ones they love.
6. Importance of family. Mama Mia. No matter what, you will always have your family. For example, when Sophie didn’t want to get married, or when its ok that she has three dads.
7. Love conquers all. The Last Song. It shows that though bad times (cancer, fighting, divorce, alcohol etc.) love is the closest thing we have to magic.
8. Death is part of life. The Lion King.
9. Sacrifice brings reward. Man in the Mirror- Michael Jackson. Seeing what is wrong in the world and with him self. Then changes his ways to give back, and to try to make this world a better place.
10. Humans have the same needs: love and care. The Notebook. Noah loves Ally so much he still takes care of her even when she doesn’t know who he his.
11. Man vs. Nature. Cast-A-Way. This movie shows you what its like to be stranded on an island for 5 years. How to over come the mental aspect and the physical aspect.
12. Over coming adversity: Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. This book shows the dreams, irritations, hardships, and passions of a person going through the holocaust.
