What my portfolio says about me:
What my portfolio says
about me:
My portfolio reflexes
my learning this year. Eighth grade has
been a tough year. However I am very grateful for having such great teachers.
My knowledge and
hunger for learning has grown this year. I think we are all at an age where we
really have no motivation to get up in the morning. However I am glad to say we’ve
made it. I am nervous yet exited for next year and the four years of high
school to come.
In my portfolio you
can get to know, me, my passions, my favorite subjects and my work. This year
we did so many assignments using the latest technology. We made countless
videos. We were also introduced to new tech tools (see examples in my
portfolio). I hope you guys enjoy.

Little Bee
This quarter we were assigned to read a non-fiction book. To honestly
say I wasn’t too happy. I tend to stay away from non-fiction. But to my
surprise I ended up really enjoying it. This book is anything from placid.
It’s about an African girl named Little Bee. She is driven out of her festering
country, by the sorcerers who control it. She makes a journey to the impeccable
country of England. Where she meets up with some old friends.
Surprisingly enough I did like this book. On a scale from one to ten I
would honestly give it a seven. Very
good life lessons are shown in this book. You can see how life can concave
from one second to another, it shows you how not to be a bystander in
life, to cobble a relationship, or too even make peace with your foe.
But the most important lesson of all is how to acolyte life to it’s
fullest, because you never know how much time you have left with the people you
love.
This book will leave you insomniac. You’ll be so teathered
to it; that you won’t want to put it down. I recommend this book for sixteen-year-old
kids and up. It’s a little overwhelming but its still an impeccable
book. The story line is queued together, so you really have to have
patience to understand it.

2.5- perfect
3.0- try using transitional words to polish it up, I really liked your review you gave details but, you didn't give it
away, also you had a really good use of the words and the paragraphs flowed
nicely. You have some grammar mistakes but, over all your review is great.

Peers questions:
How is this different

How will the kids
benefit
Will the kids feel bad
or compared?
Will it make them like
PE less?
If kids with a low
physical status are in a regular class wont they advance more?
Awnsers:
This isn’t an AP
course. These are many levels of physical education. Everybody has a different
physical state. Kids should not be put in one Physical Education class.
Both kids with a low
or high physical status could inprove. For example kids with a low physical status
could feel comfortable. And kids with a high physical state would have a bigger
field to do what they like and what they are good at with ot being held back.
Yes. Kids could feel
compared but at the same time they are improving there exercising skills.
It will actually make
them like PE more. They are getting to do things they actually can do and feel
comfortable with.
No. Taking a kid and putting
them into an environment they can not handle will make them feel 1. Uncomfortable.
2. Low self esteem. 3. They are not going to advance and 4. Will be held back;
therefore a lower grade.

ATHENS vs. SPARTA "FAVOIRTE PIECE OF WORK"

Education
and good citizenship was essential in Ancient Athens. It left us with a clear
image of what it means to be and educated person, and our ultimate goals of education.
Until the age of six/seven, most children were raised at home by their mothers
or by a trained housekeeper, (slaves, who specialized in teaching kids, where
better known as gogos). Gogos’ would teach children manners, moral beliefs and
what to expect when they leave their mothers nest. Greek myths and legends
where incorporated into the child’s learning. Girls had a scarce need for
education; on the other hand every Athenian father had the right to raise their
boy as they pleased. He could either teach his son himself or he could pay someone
to do so.
When a
young Spartan reached the age of seven, they were taken over by the state. The
state rightfully owned him until the day he die. At the age of sixteen they
were put into a secret police agency. The Spartans where more of a
military-based society; compared to the Greek way of life.
Conformity
and discipline was strictly enforced in Sparta. In Athens, great philosophers
influenced the society like Pericles, Plato etc. Both systems have their pros
and cons. The children of Athens depend on the decisions of their parents. The
children of Sparta depend on the state, which means they don’t have free will.
The
Colombian education system consists of nursery school, elementary school, high
school, technical instruction and a university education. A typical Colombian
student studies around 14 years and attempts to go to college. A typical school
year runs from February to November. In Colombia 1.8 million children between
the ages of 5 and 17 do not attend school.

school manufact.: needs
- children would be at ease with there level of learning
- kids who try in school still get low grades bc they are not being grouped by there ability
-
WHAT DO THESE PEOPLE GAIN- MOTIVATION!
teachers: work with kids that have the same mental capacity
students: they would feel "at home" would be at their EXACT level
parents: see their children being challenged
principal: see improvement in their students
1. its easier on teacher
2. kids can achieve more
3. there should be a test to group kids
4. show principals the statistics why kids should be grouped
5. and how we would do it

MY PASSION:
MY PASSION:
My world revolves
around a couple of things: fashion, photography, food and love. Ever since I
was little I’ve always had a passion for clothes. There is something about
walking out of the house knowing you look good in what you’re wearing. Over the
years you start to discover your own style, how you want to present yourself,
but also how you want people to see you. I would say my style is different. I
like to say I’m “high fashion”. I try to
incorporate unique pieces into my daily wardrobe.
Photography comes
naturally to me. I taught myself how to use a camera. I think photography at
this moment in time in just a hobby; but when I get older I will appreciate the
pictures I took. A picture freezes a moment and it takes you back to that
moment. Food is probably my biggest passion. I could eat all day. Tasting new
foods is an experience for me; but eating my favorite foods is a like a high.
When I’m older I would love to run a restaurant/bar. I would party all night
and eat all day. My last passion in: love. Love for you family, friends,
partner, life, even the love for yourself. I don’t know how to explain how much
I love, love. But to keep it simple, I guess love is the closest thing we have
to magic.

my favorite thing in each subject
Elective:
My favorite elective has always been art. This year we learned about famous artist. Once we watched a documentary on their life and did more research about them; we had to paint them. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve been fascinated be Fri Decalos work. Living in El Paso Texas, which is in between Texas and New Mexico, you could see her work everywhere. I learned about her love for art, the accident that impacted her life, her struggling relationship with her husband and much more. I believe portrait that I painted in the picture below came out beautifully, but then again, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.
Sociales:
In sociales you touch very important topics. Not only about Colombian history but what is happening to Colombia today. Something that touches my heart very deeply are the soldiers who risk their lives fighting for their country. Now-a-day, Colombia has an ongoing war with the terrorist groups (also known as the FARC). These groups specialize in kidnap, terrorist attacks, drug dealing and much more. The only way we maintain our security is because of these soldiers. So Mr. Amaya came up with an idea of sending them canned food. I learned the living conditions of the army, what they go through every day, and how to give back.

At the begging of the year we were assigned a project about the book we read over the summer. That’s summer I read three books, but my favorite was Beach Blondes. We were assigned to make a video. I told Ms. Shawn about my passion of photography. So instead of video clips I put pictures I had taken. I got to show, not only my teacher, but also my classmates my love of photography. I learned how to thourally work with iphoto and imovie.

how I've changed this year
I believe I've changed this year not only as a person but also as a student. I've learned that everything I do today, makes a change in the future! As you grow older you begin to understand the word: responsibility. When you have the privilege to study at such an alight school, you have to get out the best of it.
I've learned to really make an effort on my work! As cheesy as it sounds I've learned to really give a hundred percent and try my best. Another mile stone is how I've learned to work in groups. I've always been a very controlling person, I always like things done my way. Working in groups teaches you how to inbrase other ideas. Who know, maybe other ideas are better than yours. Working in group also gives you less work, which is always a plus.
Over the year we have been introduced to many new technology tools. Instead of the usual like microsoft word, power point and exel; we have used tools such as: extranormal, jelly cam, little bird tales and much much more!

Applying- Shakespeare
Applying- Shakespeare
Shakespeare's style i very unique. He used to write in stanzas like they do on poems. He wrote a lot of styles and different plays that are very famous on the common days. He didn't stick to only one type of writing. He used a colloquial style of writing that wouldn't be understood by teenagers or kids from the common era. He is one of the worlds most famous writer
Analyzing- Shakespeare
Analyzing- Shakespeare
The difference between Dr. Suess' style and Shakespeare's style is that they write different type of stories. Shakespeare used to write different types like histories, comedies and tragedies but Dr. Suess mostly wrote comedies because most of his stories had a happy ending. He mostly only had happy endings unlike Shakespeare. He had stories were people died at the end and some had a little of history

Reviews from:
· David Bevington argues that the play represents the dark side of love. He writes that the fairies make light of love by mistaking the lovers and by applying a love potion to Titania's eyes, forcing her to fall in love with an ass
· Maurice Hunt, Chair of the English Department at Baylor University, writes of the blurring of the identities of fantasy and reality in the play that make possible "that pleasing, narcotic dreaminess associated with the fairies of the play".
· Victor Kiernan, a Marxist scholar and historian, writes that it is for the greater sake of love that this loss of identity takes place and that individual characters are made to suffer accordingly: "It was the more extravagant cult of love that struck sensible people as irrational, and likely to have dubious effects on its acolytes"
· David Marshall, an aesthetics scholar and English Professor at the University of California – Santa Barbara, takes this theme to an even further conclusion, pointing out that the loss of identity is especially played out in the description of the mechanicals their assumption of other identities. In describing the occupations of the acting troupe, he writes, "Two construct or put together, two mend and repair, one weaves and one sews. All join together what is apart or mend what has been rent, broken, or sundered". In Marshall's opinion, this loss of individual identity not only blurs specificities, it creates new identities found in community, which Marshall points out may lead to some understanding of Shakespeare's opinions on love and marriage.
· There is a dispute over the scenario of the play as it is cited at first by Theseus that "four happy days bring in another moon", the wood episode then takes place at a night of no moon, but Lysander asserts that there will be so much light in the very night they will escape that dew on the grass will be shining like liquid pearls. Also, in the next scene Quince states that they will rehearse in moonlight, which creates a real confusion. It is possible that the Moon set during the night allowing Lysander to escape in the moonlight and for the actors to rehearse, then for the wood episode to occur without moonlight. Theseus's statement can mean four days until the next month.
OUR OPINION:
When we began to watch the movie Mid-Summer Night Dream, I’m sad to say we weren’t that thrilled. While we watched it, the Shakespearean language of the era started to make sense. Although we did not understand a large majority of what we heard it made sense to us. We understood when people were fighting or when Shakespeare was trying to be funny. As we watched the movie you couldn’t not ask your self, “Why wont someone just translate it to the slang we use today?”. You come to the conclusion in your mind that taking that away would ruin the history and poeticnis of the play. I think we its astonishing how Shakespeare plays were written hundreds of years ago but to this day we still read them and practice them and even preform them. There are parts of history that can’t be taken away. As much as the world we know today changes every second there are some things that will always be part of our culture.

description- bungee jackets
Our goal is in case of an emergency there would be jackets that allow you to jump out of a building and land without getting hurt. Once an alarm (fire, terrorist attack, etc.) is set off people would grab their bungee jackets and follow the procedures. People from the age of four would know how to follow this kind of drill. Kids would be trained since kinder garden to know how to use the bungee jackets successfully. The jackets aren’t quite jackets at all, but more of a backpack. Once you jump from the window, you pull the straps. The straps activate a rubber cushion to inflate under you. The cushion is shaped like a chair. It fits under you to have a safe landing. The rubber is a carbon based nanotube rubber made by Japanese scientist. It can be twisted, punched, rolled, bent, stretched and kicked; yet it can return to its original state. Which means our bungee jackets can be used many times. This rubber does not shatter on contact and will not melt away. This is key in case of a fire or any extreme temperatures. We all know that in times of emergencies we can all freeze up. Because of this there is a plan B to inflating your bungee jacket. The jacket can feel the speed of how fast you are falling, activating it to inflate.
3 paragraphs- group learning
- knowledge building The process of learning with my peers has helped me a lot. We are researching bungee jackets from the book the uglies written by scott westerfeld. Even though I am a loaner; I don't think our final product would be as good if I did it alone. Working in a group has helped me because I don't think our theories would be as good. We have rock solid theories now. I honestly believe that we can make our bungee jackets! We have investigated so much on each SUB-topic. Which has lead to an amazing outcome. This project does not have the hard work and dedication of one person but of 5. Every bodies brain works in different ways. Meaning I everybody thinks in different ways, which at the end of the day means better results. The 5 brains of our group were put into one final product, and as they say 2 brains are better than one!

2.5 and 3.0 novel THE HELP
2.5
I believe that the theme of The Help is Man vs. Society. The help is a story that takes place during the time of the Civil Rights era, in the 1960’s, in Jackson Mississippi. Skeeter (main character) is very different from her friends. Unlike many women of that era, Skeeter is single, has a degree and wants to begin a career and be independent. Over time, you can tell that Skeeter becomes uncomfortable with the way her friends treat “The Help”. Aibileen and Minny are two maids that work for her friends. She starts to realize that people treat black employers very differently than white employers. Skeeter tries to make people see things from another perspective. She wants here society (privileged whites) to see the other side of the ball (less-privileged African-Americans). She wants the truth to come out about what really happens behind close doors. All of this was supper controversial in the United States at this time in history. Especially in Jackson Mississippi. People in the south use to and still believe that people with darker skin color or less than. At this point in time nobody wanted to talk about the abuse done to the help. People where totally against African-Americans having a voice or a say in society. This is why I believe the theme of this book is Man vs. Society.
Examples:
- Did they only have black maids in the southern part of the United States or also in different places apart from Mississippi?
- Why wouldn’t Minny talk to Skeeter about the book if Minny wanted the truth so badly?
- Was the scratch done by Francine with her ring accidental, or did she want to do it?
3.0
Sophie’s theme: Man vs. Society
Cristina’s theme: Humans have the same needs: love and care
We have come to the conclusion that the better theme is Man vs. Society. We believe this is because the theme of: all human need love and care, is a sub-theme; it goes into the theme of Man vs. Society. In other words all humans need is love and care, which means everybody deserves to be treated equal. At that point in history, society didn’t believe that. People thought that because of your skin color you where different. This is why the over all theme is Man vs. society.
